What is sedation?

Sedation is a safe and effective way to help you feel at ease during dental treatment and more willing to visit the practice. It uses medication to aid relaxation, which is carefully monitored and balanced to ensure it is right for you. Sedation can eliminate your worries but doesn’t put you to sleep. You remain conscious and able to answer questions, so we can treat you effectively, but won’t be able to remember the process once the sedation has worn off.

Dr Adam Winter has been a member of SAAD (Society of Advanced Anaesthesia in Dentistry) since 2012. He has a gentle approach, and is highly trained and qualified in providing intravenous sedation for patients with dental anxiety.

Is sedation suitable for everyone?

While it can be a lifesaver for many patients, sedation dentistry is not for everyone. However, we have many options that can help our nervous patients. If you are afraid of needles, we can use oral sedation, so you can be fully relaxed before you even set foot in the treatment room.

In many cases, we may not have to use dental sedation at all. Our caring and gentle approach gives you a relaxing and pleasant experience even without sedation, helping you feel at ease in our care and grow in confidence with dental treatment. Ultimately, though, the choice is yours.

What does sedation involve?

Consultation

1. Consultation

If you are interested in having sedation to help calm you during dental treatment, we begin with an initial consultation. We make sure you are suitable by assessing your general health, including your blood pressure and oxygen levels. We explain the process to you and give you the chance to ask any questions.

Sedation

2. Sedation

We will gently administer a sedative to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. The amount of sedation will be carefully controlled, and monitored closely throughout the treatment process.

Anxiety-free treatment

3. Anxiety-free treatment

Once the sedation has taken effect, we begin your dental treatment. We closely monitor you during the procedure, checking the level of sedation remains suitable for your needs. You can talk to us and answer questions.

Aftercare

4. Aftercare

The effects of the sedation take a while to wear off once your treatment has finished. We give you some aftercare advice and ensure you have someone to take you home and keep an eye on you for a few hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of sedation do you offer?

At Smilestyle, we offer intravenous (IV) sedation and oral sedation. In most cases, IV sedation is used, as this allows us to better monitor and balance the amount of sedation given throughout treatment. However, if you are scared of needles, we can offer oral sedation as an alternative.

Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

If you suffer from dental anxiety, have a dental phobia, difficulty getting numb, or extensive dental needs, or need a more involved procedure, you are likely a good candidate for sedation dentistry. We can discuss your suitability for sedation at your initial consultation and recommend the best course of action for you.

What are the risks and benefits of sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry offers several benefits, including reduced anxiety and fear, increased comfort, and overall improved oral health. It can also help you feel able to undergo routine dental procedures and make your visit to our dental practice a much more positive one.Sedation is generally very safe, but potential risks can occur. These can include allergic reactions, drowsiness and nausea. We discuss this in detail with you during your consultation.

Will I feel pain during my procedure with sedation?

You should not feel any pain during a procedure with sedation. While sedation itself does not provide pain relief, once the sedative has taken effect we can administer appropriate pain medication that you may not have accepted beforehand. This ensures you remain suitably relaxed and pain-free.

How long will it take to recover after sedation dentistry?

It typically takes around 24 hours to fully recover after having IV sedation. You will need to have someone to take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. Although you may feel fully recovered quite quickly, drowsiness can persist so you should wait 24 hours before resuming your normal daily activities.

Will I go to sleep?

Although IV sedation does not put you to sleep, many patients are so relaxed that they sleep through their dental treatment. Your vital signs are monitored throughout, so it is completely safe. Even if you remain awake, you will likely have no memory of your treatment.
